SCHOOL GROUPS
The displays in the buildings and around the grounds provide an excellent glimpse into life in early New Zealand. The mission buildings are packed with objects no longer in daily use, and provide an excellent starting point for discussion: basins and ewers in the bedrooms for washing, a mangle for laundry, slates for use in the schoolroom. Items of period dress and children's games from an earlier era are available for class use.
A visit to The Elms can be used to tell many stories: the work of missionaries in New Zealand, daily life of a nineteenth century family, the development of the city of Tauranga.
The Elms is the centre of a historic area which includes the Mission Cemetery and the Monmouth Redoubt.
Trained guides with educational experience liaise with teachers to provide an appropriate experience for each group. Curriculum linked resources are available on loan, in advance, for teachers planning a class visit.
We encourage pre-trip visits by teachers to help with study planning. Pre-trip visits to schools by guides may also be arranged.
At least two weeks' notice of a school visit is required, in order to arrange for appropriate guides.

WHO ARE THE GUIDES?
The guides are volunteers with an interest in The Elms and its place in the history of the Bay of Plenty and New Zealand. They are trained to show visitors around the buildings and grounds of this former mission station. They will tell you stories of the early years of Alfred and Charlotte Brown's mission work, the troubled times of the land wars, the establishment of the township of Tauranga, tales of sacrifice and dedication by subsequent owners in their efforts to preserve the property and its contents.
