Little is known of Charlotte's early life, except that she was working as a teacher when she married Alfred. Missionaries' wives were vetted by the CMS. Charlotte proved more than acceptable, being described as a young woman "of piety and superior in education to most Missionary Females."
She proved an ideal helpmeet for the young missionary, teaching in the infants and girls' schools, running the mission station when he was away, and travelling long distances over rough country to help other missionary wives at times of sickness or childbirth.
Charlotte kept indifferent health, suffering from crippling headaches. She died from a respiratory illness, for which she had sought medical help in Auckland, in November 1855. She is buried in Auckland.
